When you live so far from the places that define who you are, it's usually wonderful to be reminded of them. Not so this week. A gun-wielding madman shot up the West Village, leaving a trail of dead innocents before meeting a bloody end on Bleecker Street. Handguns are illegal in Australia. There is violence, of course, but homicidal maniacs are not so easily armed. The District of Columbia's tough gun laws were recently struck down -- appeals will most likely fall to the mercy of the Supreme Court, generating puddles of drool from mouth-breathing gun proponents aroused by the spectre of the newly conservative Bush Bunch re-reinstating the falsity of their interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, in which every man, woman and child is entitled to lock and load anytime, anywhere.
They are madmen of a different sort ... only their lack of humanity will kill generations, not just a hard-working bartender and two auxillary police officers on an early spring evening in the West Village.
