'It's a capitulation.'

So says an economist about U.S. drivers' attitudes towards permanently high gasoline prices. The sight of Tennessee parking lots bursting with bulbous SUVs always struck me as obscene; now it's amusing to imagine their owners cursing those same gas-guzzling behemoths. Um ... karma?

Count your blessings, North Americans: Gas in Australia is forecast to cost $1.70 a litre soon -- that's about $6.40 a gallon. Crikey!
