Bainimarama's undertow.
Most Indo-Fijians I got to know during my 6 weeks in Fiji last year were hopeful that interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, who led the December 2005 military coup, has their interests in mind as he works to change what he correctly calls a 'racist' electoral process. (The majority of Indigenous Fijians do the bidding of their village chief -- the antithesis of one-person/one-vote democracy.) Still, it's 'disappointing' that Bainimarama has broken his vow of staging elections in 2009. After the crackdowns on journalistic freedom earlier this year, it's hard not to judge this action as another giant step backwards for Fiji.
