Here in the land of sports worship, the Aussie Olympic swim team is akin to the men's basketball team in the US: A much-hyped and commercialized entity that's expected to dominate. Michael Phelps's exploits aside, Aussies see themselves as the world's best in the pool. Even the unveiling of Olympic swimwear was greeted with much media hoopla a few months back, especially as its design was expected to provide a competitive advantage.
So with world records being shattered with the frequency of free speech crackdowns by China's communist government, you'd think the Aussie press would be wondering if such high-tech design devalues records altogether.
Think again. Technology is NOT to be questioned -- even when a 'wardrobe malfunction' sinks the hopes of an Aussie swimmer. It's all about medal tallies and Aussie gold, mate.
