Fiji Redux: Caqalai Island pt I

The quintessential South Seas Paradise aspect of this most recent trip to the Fiji Islands was a 2-night stay on Caqalai Island (above).
A 20-minute skiff ride delivered me and 2 American tourists to the island.

A flawless Koro Sea.

Our skiff's welcoming party.

Beachside? My bure (visible on the left) was practically surfside.

My electricity-free bure.

From my bure's tiny doorway, looking towards the dining hall.

It only takes 30 minutes to walk the rim of Caqalai Island.

Most of the island's 14 acres are impassable jungle.

Caqalai's tiny resort is on the western side of the island. Its eastern face gets hammered by Pacific trade winds, leaving a beach of exposed volcanic rock.

Snake Island. Home to ... long, white sea snakes. I saw one while snorkeling. Amazing swimmers.

A walkable passageway to Snake Island appears at low tide.

Looking back at Caqalai along the passageway.

A massive thunderhead passes east of the island.
