History schmistory.

Historical markers proclaiming 'Washington Slept Here' are common sights in the Revolutionary War-rich area where I grew up. Historic buildings in the States are revered like pagan idols. In Australia ... not so much. Exhibit #1: This photo of Melbourne's oldest house. It dates to 1842. Developers are licking their chops over the land. Now that a photo's been published in the papers, community activists will likely take up its cause, thus sealing its doom. Why? Developers never lose these battles. This house will next make headlines after it's been destroyed by a fire of 'suspicious origins'. You can bet on it.
