Down by the river.

The Sigatoka River, that is, with Brownie, Raj and Hunter during my recent stay on Nana's farm in Korokoro.
Brownie waits -- Raj and Hunter don't. When I first stayed on the farm in 2007 he and I would take walks to the river and were almost always joined by Raj and Hunter. Now as soon as I head in the general direction of the rear of the house I feel Brownie at my side, wagging his mangled tail, willing me to escort him riverside.

These western storm clouds predictably missed the Sigatoka Valley, which is in the midst of a crop-crippling drought.

A horse and her foal watch us warily. There are no stables in Fiji. When not being used for field work or transportation horses are loosely tied to a spot and moved every night.

An Indian home sits high across the river.

Hunter and Raj. Both are true outside dogs -- mean and territorial. They act like competing adolescents around me.

Brownie's delight.
