Chumley's

Bad news on a Bedford Street institution: Fireplace collapsed inside, major structural damage feared. Chumley's is that rare NYC tavern that has survived busloads of map-clutching tourists and pods of power-drinking financial district stiffs to remain a cozy West Village hideaway, especially in the dead of winter. A 'secret' side entrance and unmarked front door led to an old-world den lined with book jackets and framed photos of dead writers, smelling of seasoned firewood and hops, dark and noisy and chockablock with ghosts from its speakeasy past.

There is absolutely nothing like it here in Australia.

Chumley's was also the site of one of my favorite photos of Janine (who tipped me off to the news) & Amanda, which I'd post if my photo albums weren't stacked on a shelf in Asbury Park ....
