The road to Natadola.

In Le Cafe after bodysurfing for an hour at Natadola Beach this morning. Most of Vitu Levu is ringed by reefs -- hence its amazing snorkeling & diving -- but Natadola offers one of the island's few surf breaks. I'm told it fills on weekends but had it all to myself today. Half the fun (well, maybe not half) is in the 25 km drive from Sigatoka, which winds past Sigatoka Sand Dune Park, along the western slopes of the Coral Coast, through bright green fields of sugar cane, and finally down a washboard road that ends in a coconut grove. The 4x4 allows me to park beside the beach within a stand of gnarled bush, offering the view shown above.
Typical vista along Queens Hwy.

Washboard road includes this ancient feat of rural engineering.

Coconut grove.

Lovely Natadola Beach.
