The Hawthorn Hawks upset the Geelong Cats to win the 2008 AFL Premiership in front of just over 100,000 fans at the MCG. Aradhna and I were supposed to meet a friend at a pub in Richmond to watch the game but when we got there a line stretched along the sidewalk. It was the same for many pubs along Swan Street -- Aussies do love their drink -- but we found one with a few empty seats, multiple plasma screen TVs on every wall and a plethora of colorful characters. The game was tight until the 3rd quarter, when Hawthorne exploded for 5 quick goals that certainly stunned the state of Victoria. Waiting for the train back to Balaclava at the Richmond train station, which sits beside the MCG, pockets of blue-&-white bedecked Geelong fans walked and waited in silence. Hawks fans (like the ones below) remained in the MCG long after the final horn, and celebrated deep into Sunday.
