Aradhna and I had a chance to see a giant of quality Indian cinema in person last Friday night, as Aamir Khan introduced 'Peepli [Live]' at the Regent Theatre. Khan produced the film, which was screened as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF). More photos of his appearance may be found here.
It's criminal that Khan's work remains largely unknown outside of Bollywood circles. He's more than a wonderful actor -- he's a visionary with a social conscience. 'Peepli [Live]' illustrates the plight of Indian farmers while exposing the greed, deceitfulness and outright lunacy of politicians and media members. The film is set in a poor Indian village, has no big stars, and casts an unflattering light on key aspects of Indian society. In other words, a tough sell. Khan's star power has never been brighter after starring in India's all-time highest grossing film, the unbelievably enjoyable 3 Idiots. 'Peepli [Live]' deserves an audience of equal enormity.
Despite Khan's relative anonymity outside India, he's adored by those who've grown up with his films (like Aradhna). This video I took of him being introduced Friday night proves adoration was in full display at the sold-out Regent Theatre:
